Open your phone's photo app and search for "dog" or "cat". For most pet people, the number that comes back is a little shocking: hundreds, often thousands of pictures. The first wobbly steps home. The muddy-paw era. The way they still sleep upside down on the sofa.
Those photos are some of the most loved things we own — and some of the least seen. They sit between screenshots and receipts, slowly sinking further down the scroll. Here's how to give them a better life.
1. Gather them in one place first
Before deciding what to do, collect. Most phones recognise pets automatically, so a quick search for "dog", "cat" or your pet's name will surface most of them. Add them to a single album — for example, "Biscuit, 2019 – today". Don't sort yet. Just gather.
- On iPhone: Photos → Search → type "dog" or "cat" → Select all → Add to album.
- On Android (Google Photos): Search → "Pets" → choose your pet's face → Select → Add to album.
- Check old phones, cloud backups and family chats — some of the best moments were taken by someone else.
2. Back them up properly
A phone is not an archive. Phones get lost, break and fill up. Keep at least one extra copy of your pet album somewhere else — a cloud service, a computer or an external drive. If a photo really matters, it should live in two places.
3. Resist the urge to delete the "imperfect" ones
Blurry zoomies, half a face, a nose too close to the lens — these are often the photos that feel most like them. Delete true duplicates and accidental pocket shots, but keep the imperfect moments. Years from now, they're the ones you'll smile at.
4. Pick a few to print
Printed photos get looked at every day. A small frame on a desk or a single print on the fridge does more for a memory than a thousand files in the cloud. Choose one photo that feels like their personality — not necessarily the sharpest one.
5. Or use all of them at once
Choosing just one photo is hard when you have a thousand you love. A photo mosaic solves that: one favourite portrait becomes the big picture, and hundreds of your other photos become the tiny tiles that build it.

From across the room, you see your pet. Up close, you see their whole life — walks, naps, birthdays, the day they came home. It's one of the few ways to display a huge photo collection without it feeling cluttered.
What makes a great pet photo mosaic
- More photos means more detail — a few hundred is a great start.
- Variety in colour and light (indoor, outdoor, day, evening) helps the big picture look richer.
- Choose a main photo where your pet's face is clear, well lit and fills most of the frame.
- Phone photos are perfect — no professional camera needed.
Your camera roll, finally on the wall
Whether you print one favourite, build an album or turn everything into a single mosaic, the goal is the same: bring those moments out of the scroll and into your everyday life. They were never meant to stay hidden.
